WASHINGTON: In addition to being an utter environmental disaster, the BP oil spill's next victim may likely be the south's seafood industry.

President Barack Obama has announced a multi-agency initiative to ensure the safety of the seafood obtained from the gulf. Loose US food safety regulations and recent controversies involving salmonella and e.coli, however, have done little to allay concerns about the federal government's ability to wipe the oil off the industry and nurse it back to health.
