PR Newswire | 12 Jun, 2010
NASHVILLE: Little Planet Learning's "TALON - Census Taking" program has won the 2010 CODiE Award from the Software & Information Industry Association for Best Corporate Learning Solution in the Education category.

"We're thrilled to receive our second CODiE Award” particularly in such a highly competitive category like Corporate Learning Solutions," says Bill Nelson, CEO of Little Planet Learning. "It's a testament to the dedication and hard work of our employees to have developed a highly effective and well-received training program that sharpens the skills our troops need to achieve their mission, protect civilians and come home safe."

Nelson considers the award to be a tribute to the experience and dedication of the many partners Little Planet has been honored to work with, including the U.S. Army Battle Lab "Language Technology Office, U.S. Army Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca, and U.S. Army Special Operations Command – 5th Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell.

The CODiE Award for Best Corporate Learning Solution is given to the best technology platform, service or provider that supports the continuing education of corporate employees via electronic means. This includes learning management systems, content development, delivery, and packaging tools. It may include delivery by CD, DVD, online, handheld or multimedia packages.

Little Planet Learning's TALON program (Tactical Language Online Network) is designed to teach both language and culture in the context of specific social or mission-based situations. TALON currently includes three lesson modules dedicated to preparing U.S. Army personnel with tactical Iraqi language and culture skills. The "TALON" "Census Taking" lesson modules prepare U.S. Army personnel to conduct door-to-door operations in an Iraqi-speaking community. Unlike other language programs, TALON utilizes research-based instructional design and effective speech recognition to practice and refine mission-specific language and cultural skills. A significant advantage is TALON's development speed "new languages or missions are available in 90 to 120 days" well within a pre-deployment training window.

"The U.S. Army has realized the practical benefits of supplementing standard academic language education with combined language and cultural training focused on specific tasks. We're excited to continue to support the Army's efforts in various areas moving forward," says Nelson. "The experience has also expanded the capabilities of our corporate training programs."
