The recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the United States on Indian imports is a wake-up call for our exporters, especially for MSMEs who export to the US. These tariffs, definitely, are not just another policy shift and are indeed a direct hit to our competitiveness in one of our largest markets. As costs rise, our products will become less attractive to US buyers, which in turn will force them to look elsewhere. In a broader scenario this is not just about losing customers, it is about losing entire market segments that our businesses have worked hard to build over decades.

Having said that, I refuse to see this as a major setback. If anything, it is actually a sign that we need to evolve. Traditional trade routes are no longer reliable, and relying solely on government negotiations to resolve these issues is no longer a business strategy - whether you are a big entity or a MSME, it doesn't matter.

Instead, we must take control of our own destiny. I strongly believe digital marketing is our best weapon to counteract these challenges. The old way of doing business—trade fairs, middlemen, and industry networks—is no longer enough. We need to be where our customers are - and they are all online.

By shifting focus to direct-to-consumer models, we can cut out intermediaries and maintain competitive pricing despite these tariffs. With well-targeted digital campaigns, we can reach potential buyers who are willing to pay a premium for quality, authenticity, and sustainability, for which our products are known. Instead of waiting for distributors to market our products, we should be leveraging B2B platforms to build our own customer base.

For us, this is a moment of reckoning. We can either lament the loss of favourable trade terms or adapt. I strongly recommend choosing the latter. The world is moving towards digital commerce at an unprecedented pace, and if we fail to adapt, we risk falling behind - added tariffs or no tariffs. Digital marketing is not just an option anymore and is a necessity for survival and success. The sooner we embrace it, the sooner we can turn this challenge into an opportunity.
