Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Dr E. M. Sudarsana Natchiappan Saturday said that over 30 percent of India's population was young, unlike in many other countries, and the skilled youth will lead India in the 21st century.
"India has the capacity to lead itself. The present leaders are having very great opportunities for nation-building owing to the skilled and dynamic young people," he added.
Addressing the TIDES Leadership Summit, 'Making the Difference', organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Chennai, Dr Natchiappan said that in a democracy every person was a leader.
"Everybody has the capacity to build up, but by consensus we create leadership. One has to be a leader in oneâs area of operation," he said.
The proposed Tamil Nadu-Karnataka-Kerala industrial corridor was like a garland with big flowers in between. Nodes of development would be created along the corridor with the collaboration of foreign countries like Japan and Germany. The development works would be undertaken by the youth of this country, an asset no other country can boast of, he said.
The Minister said that the National Food Security Bill would act as a catalyst of economic growth by increasing farmers' income and creating employment opportunities in many sectors.
Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Member of Parliament, said that it was correct leadership that kept India as a vibrant democracy after Independence, unlike most other countries .
He said a good leader should have self awareness, knowledge of his strength and weakness, self confidence without arrogance and the ability to think and act in diverse situations with a high degree of optimism.
A good leader should not allocate blames for outcome and should not discount the emotions and perspectives of other persons.
He also should not live in ivory towers without concern for others, nor delay dealing with problems and should never be insular.
"Ultimately leadership must involve not merely words, not oratory, not charisma, not personal traits, it must involve content, innovative content and policies. A leader is what a leader does. Leaders do things differently and that is why they make a difference," Dr Singhvi added.
