After announcing the extension of the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) for the textile industry for the 12th Five Year Plan, Union Minister of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Anand Sharma Saturday assured the Indian textile industry that his Government is conscious about their needs.

"There will be more allocation under the 12 th plan then under the 11th plan, so "those in textiles sector must feel assured that the government is conscious what their needs are," he told media.

Earlier in the day Sharma has announced ninth National Investment and Manufacturing zone(NIMZ), a third for Maharashtra in Nagpur.

"I am happy to inform that ‘in-principle’ approval has been accorded to the proposal given its significance," said the Minister after inaugurating the National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (NIIPM) in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik.

The proposed NIMZ area is situated in Kuhi and Umred Taluka of Nagpur district and has an area of 6280 hectares. It will attract investment of approx. Rs. 25,000 crores and will provide gainful direct and indirect employment to 2,60,000 people of the Nagpur district.

Sharma also announced state of the art convention centre at Nagpur on a land provided by the State government. Such convention centres have been established in Chennai and Bangaluru in partnership with the respective States. Cost of construction would be met from the ASIDE scheme of the central government.

The Minister also directed that a virtual APEDA Centre be established at Nagpur. APEDA already has a full fledged office at Mumbai which has been functioning since 1990. In the States where APEDA does not have a physical office, its activities are conducted in conjunction with the respective state Governments, through virtual offices.

Later at gathering of industry leaders from the Vidarbha and other regions of the State organized by CII Sharma was apprised of the issues pertaining to Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN), an Airport cum SEZ.

Acknowledging the need to rework the SEZ scheme, Sharma announced that a comprehensive review of the SEZ guidelines and fine tune them for retaining their attractiveness is underway.
