The government is not going to give relaxations to foreign firms in single brand retail as FDI in retail to witness 30 percent procurement from SMEs, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), Vayalar Ravi told media today.

"Thirty percent procurement norm from SMEs in retail FDI policy is meant for the welfare of them (SMEs).
Any relaxation which they (foreign firms) demand, if it affects my people and industry, I won't accept," said Ravi, after assuming charge as Minister for MSME in the national capital today.

The cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year gave green signal to allow up to 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail, and raised the limit in single-brand retail from 51 percent to 100 percent with 30 percent quota of Indian SMEs in retail FDI policy.

Taking charge he elaborated on the importance of micro, small and medium enterprises in the growth of the Nation.

The new minister said that MSME is a major labour oriented ministry which can create jobs and more people can be employed.

He said that Khadi and Coir are the major industries which can offer self-employment.

The Minister also had a detailed interaction with the Secretary and other senior officers of the Ministry.

First kindly get the amendment in the WTO act which strictly does not allow member countries to get this rule (30% local sourcing from SMEs) implemented. The duty of elected leaders is to control the bureaucracy and to save interests of the public. Our aim should be to get maximum people self employed and not to turn them into employees (counter salesman, delivery man, clerks, D grade employees, etc.). The problem is our representatives live in another world and have become arrogant princes and kings. Self interest is everything for them so only corrupt bureaucrats are able to keep in touch with them. Even honest ministers/leaders are bound to get exploitative rules implemented according to the wishes of their party boss. We fear FDI in retail is being promoted by under pressure including Indian builders and not only MNCs.
