Anytime Fitness Opens 2,500th Gym in Madrid, Spain

PR Newswire | 09 Jun, 2014
NEW DELHI and MADRID, Spain: Anytime Fitness, the world's largest co-ed health club chain, recently achieved another impressive milestone with the opening of its 2,500th gym. Representatives from the U.S. Embassy attended a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony at the gym, located in Madrid, on May 27. The ceremony occurred almost exactly 12 years after the very first Anytime Fitness club opened in the United States (Cambridge, MN) May 28, 2002. The franchise's newest gym is the sixth to open in Spain in the last two years.

"A very small percentage of U.S.-based franchises can say that nearly 1/4th of their units are located outside of the United States," said Chuck Runyon, CEO of Anytime Fitness. "It's proof that our business model is attractive to potential franchisees and consumers worldwide. In fact, 2014 will likely be the first year that we open more gyms internationally than in the U.S."

Anytime Fitness opened its first gym in U.S in 2002. Currently, there are 8 Anytime Fitness gyms located in India.

"Although our gyms are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our franchisees enjoy the fact that they can determine their own working hours, never having to miss important family events," said Mr. Vikas Jain, the master franchisee for Anytime Fitness in India. "Meantime, our members appreciate that our gyms feature all of the equipment, programs and classes they need for a first-class exercise routine while our staff is trained to deliver personal service and individual attention."

Anytime Fitness predicts that an additional 250 Anytime Fitness clubs will open in India within the next 10 years.

Worldwide Growth

Anytime Fitness' rapid growth in India mirrors the gym's expansion worldwide. Anytime Fitness clubs are now open on five continents in nearly 20 countries. In the last five years alone, more than 350 gyms have opened in Australia, 30 gyms have opened in the UK, 41 gyms have opened in Japan, and 23 gyms have opened in The Netherlands.

"This year may be the first that we open more clubs internationally than domestically, but it won't be the last," said John Kersh, VP of International Development for Anytime Fitness. "I expect that trend to continue for the foreseeable future."

Earlier this year, Entrepreneur magazine ranked Anytime Fitness #1 on its prestigious Franchise 500® list. The ranking is based on the financial strength and stability of the company and its growth patterns. Other recent accolades include "One of America's most promising companies" (Forbes) and "One of 10 great franchise bets" (CNN Money).
