Radiation is One of the Biggest Threats to the Modern Era

PR Newswire | 25 Jul, 2013
NEW DELHI: The radiation threat from various sources in the modern era is a massive concern for humanity, and there is a concerted need to tackle it through stringent laws and compliances.

This is the key message of the book The Radiation Threat: An Emergency in the Making, authored by Harsaran Bir Kaur Pandey and published by Vikas Publishing House. The book was launched by the Hon'ble Minister for Rural Development Sri Jairam Ramesh at a function in New Delhi.

This book is an exposé on the serious dangers of radiation and the threat it poses to human and animal health and the environment. The book examines the adverse impact on human health exerted by radiation from three primary sources:

Digital technologies with special focus on mobile tower radiation, and other digital devices such as mobile phones, laptops and the wi-fi technology,
the Earth's energies and natural phenomena, and
that emanating from materials such as granite and reinforced steel used in modern construction

The book points the needle at this silent emergency that needs to be addressed urgently and positively. The harmful effects of all this cannot be wished away. The book scientifically delineates the characteristics of radiation and offers economical, accessible and simple solutions as suggested by the practice of Environics to minimize its ill-effects. Furthermore, the book documents the efficiency of these solutions as experienced by scores of establishments including offices, factories, warehouses and homes.

Speaking about the book and the subject, the author Harsaran Bir Kaur Pandey said, "Our exposure to radiation has increasedhundredfold over the past ten years. This particularly puts our young people at high risk from diseases like cancer, tumours, headaches, sleeplessness and even sterility, because of their close contact with new Wi-Fi technologies over long periods of time. Government agencies, the telecommunication industry and civil society must mandate more stringent laws and ensure their strict compliance to protect life."

The entire book and the subject it focuses on acquire great significance in the light of various court rulings against mobile towers and the possible linkage between radiation emitted by them and cancer.

The panel discussion during the event moderated by Paranjoy Guha Thakurta also tried to analyze if enough is being done to contain radiation and to nullify its impact.
