FIFA World Cup as big as Christmas for retailers

PR Newswire | 03 Jun, 2010
LEEDS, (England): One of the most highly anticipated sporting events of the year is about to begin, and as the World Cup draws ever closer, retailers are claiming it's the best sales opportunity since the Christmas period. The UK has gone mad for all things football, whilst voucher code sites such as VoucherSeeker (http://www.voucherseeker.co.uk/vouchercodes) offer consumers discounts on those must have products.

From TVs and football shirts to goal posts and footballs, the nation longs to celebrate the World Cup and retailers are eager to supply plenty of products and discount vouchers in order to allow consumers to do so for less.

The recent few years have been hard for retailers. The recession, low consumer confidence and snow storms all affected consumer spending habits- many of which are set to now be permanent shopping habits. Despite the country coming out of recession, research by Datamonitors found that 48% of people still felt financially worse off than six months ago. Not only this but 42% of consumers are much more aware of how much waste they are producing and are therefore cutting down the number of times they go to the shops in order to produce less.

"As summer approaches, so does a slower time for retailers, which is why the World Cup is important," states Duke Tanson, VoucherSeeker Director. "It gives retailers a chance to get people into their stores and get consumers interested in products again. VoucherSeeker has not only seen Vodafone promotional codes ( http://www.voucherseeker.co.uk/voucher-codes/64728/vodafonepromotionalcodes) and Currys discount codes ( http://www.voucherseeker.co.uk/voucher-codes/76737/currys-discount-codes.html ) on it's site but also discount codes for TVs as well as football shirts and equipment, everyone's going mad for football products!"

Research by Mintel found that during the World Cup 63% of people will be increasing the amount they spend on leisure, whilst 31% will be buying alcohol for matches. Another 29% will be buying food and snacks and 13% will buy a newspaper in order to keep up with World Cup events. 61% of consumers will be watching the World Cup at home, but the impact of the World Cup on spending will be over and above their normal spending. Consumers wishing to keep an eye on their spending will be able to turn to voucher sites such as VoucherSeeker in order to get discounts. Not only is the spending frenzy good for retailers and promotional code sites such as VoucherSeeker, but it will also help to boost the economy after the difficult spending period.

For many retailers, the World Cup is as big a retail opportunity as Christmas, due to the length of the tournament, as well as the build up and spending opportunity.

Christmas has been difficult for retailers for the past few years, as recession woes and job cuts saw people spending less and turning to voucher code sites such as VoucherSeeker in order to save money. Not only this, but consumers became more active in researching products online in order to ensure they get the best deal possible, often turning to online stores instead of the high street to do their Christmas and essential shopping.

The World Cup is as big event for retailers as the Christmas period. The month long tournament will see people increase their leisure spending, as well as buying extra groceries in order to enjoy the event. After a difficult few years for retailers, due to weather conditions, recession and job losses, the World Cup will be a welcome spending opportunity for both retailers and the economy- giving the UK a welcome spending boost. Consumers wishing to spend less will do so with increasing numbers of voucher codes from sites such as VoucherSeeker (http://www.voucherseeker.co.uk/vouchercodes) in order to save money. As the tournament continues, consumer spending will rise as all hope to enjoy the event.
