In a unique endeavour, 500 women artisans, weavers and farmers from across the country come together to exhibit and sell their organic products/produce at the Dilli Haat in New Delhi on Saturday.

The main aim of the 10-day exhibition - with 'Women and organic Products' as a theme - is to support and encourage women and women-led groups that promote organic farming and spread awareness about the benefits of organic products with the motto of "eat healthy live healthy".

Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated the exhibition, entry to which would be free for the general public.

Speaking to the media, Gandhi said women from Leh to Kanyakumari and from Kohima to Kutch have been represented at the event that has given women farmers a platform to display and sell their products directly to the people.

Appreciating the WCD ministry's initiative, Singh said the agriculture ministry would be happy to provide funds for promoting such organic melas across the country.

Tribal and ethnic foods, pickles and preserves, rice, pulses, spices, vegetables and fruits, fabrics, dyes and dresses, cosmetics and other household products are on sale at the exhibition.

Besides organic products, people also get an opportunity to taste a variety of home-cooked and organic food at the haat.

Another unique feature of the exhibition is 'forgotten foods' such as jhongora, millet, kuttu, bajra and amaranth, which were earlier regarded as healthy foods eaten by all but have lost their popularity over time.

The exhibition, which will end on November 23, has been set up with the involvement of Navdanya, P.R. Grid and Organic Farming Association of India.
