Former McKinsey partner and strategic consultant on emerging markets Ireena Vittal has joined the board of Wipro Ltd as a director, it was announced Wednesday.

"Vittal, who has two decades of experience as a thought leader, will serve as an independent member on our board," the company said in a statement.

As a founding member of the economic development practice and emerging markets practice at McKinsey & co, the 45-year-old Mumbai-based Vittal has worked with governments and public institutions to design and implement solutions for inclusive urban development and sustainable rural growth in India.

"Vittal brings in decades of analytical insights on emerging markets, industry growth models as well as diverse experience in the public and private sectors. I am confident that we will gain from her acumen and experience," Wipro chairman Azim Premji said.

Accepting the offer, Vittal said she looked forward to contributing to Wipro's next phase of growth as it was one of the most trusted brands in the global IT sector and had a rich legacy of technology innovation.

Vittal also serves as an independent director on the boards of Axis Bank and Titan Industries besides being a senior advisor of Blufin Advisors Ltd.

With a graduate degree in electronics and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, Vittal co-authored several studies in agriculture and urbanisation.
