India's production of urea, a widely used nitrogen-release fertilizer, fell below the target of 18.93 lakh metric tonne (MT) set for March, according to official data released Tuesday.
In March 2012, estimated production of urea stood at 17.28 lakh MT. However, production of Diammonium phosphate (DAP) was 0.07 lakh MT higher to 3.10 lakh MT as against the target of 3.03 lakh MT, shows the data.
During the month, approximately 21.25 lakh MT (both indigenous and imported) of urea was dispatched to various states across the country. Availability of urea during the month was about 24.94 lakh MT and this was satisfactory in all the states, it added.
Further, sale of urea in the current season up to March 31 was about 151.16 lakh MT, which is lower by 3.15% as compared to the sale of 156.08 lakh MT in the corresponding period of the previous year.
As regards decontrolled fertilizers, availability of DAP and MOP (Muriate of Potash) had been about 18.56 lakh MT and 7.28 lakh MT respectively in March, which was adequate to meet the demand of the States.
India imported 1.59 lakh MT of urea from OMIFCO, Oman in March. In addition, the country imported 0.25 lakh MT of DAP and 1.18 lakh MT of MOP during the month, stated the release.
