After becoming the deepest amongst major ports in the country, Chennai Port can now handle large sized ships, said a top official.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Chennai Port Trust Chairman Cyril C. George said the port can now handle container vesels with a capacity of around 8,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), which was a major achievement.
He said that last fiscal, the port handled 50.06 million ton (MT) of cargo down from 52.54 MT cargo handled during 2014-15, but despite the reduction in cargo handling volume, it earned a higher net surplus by handling project cargo that generated better revenue.
