Jordan has with the European Union support launched a 5-megawatts solar plant located in the south of the country, a media report said.

Jordan's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh said the plant, which was built at a total cost of $ 8 million, is part of Jordan's efforts to boost renewable energy, Xinhua news agency quoted the state-run Petra news agency as reporting.

The plant, he said, will help reduce electricity costs and prices , adding that the European Union (EU) provided support for Jordan in the field of renewable energy.

He said the project was implemented in partnership between private and the public sectors, stressing that Jordan will go ahead with several projects in the field of renewable energy.

Jordan, which imports 97 per cent of its energy needs annually, is working on a strategy to boost renewable energy sector.

By 2020, around 10 per cent of Jordan's electricity will be generated by solar and wind projects.
