State-run equipment major BHEL Sunday commissioned its first 660-MW supercritical thermal unit at NTPC's Barh power plant in Bihar.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said its 660 MW Boiler Turbine Generator (BTG) unit for Stage II Unit 4 of state-owned generator National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) thermal project attained full load.

"The super critical steam parameters for this project - efficiency and heat rate - are better than those of comparable supercritical projects presently under installation by others," a BHEL statement said.

The company won the order for 660 MW sets for the 1,320 MW project through international competitive bidding. The scope of work included design, engineering, manufacture, supply and erection.

BHEL, which can manufacture thermal sets having 1,000 MW rating, is currently executing orders for supply and installation of 27 steam generators and 24 turbines with supercritical parameters of 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW ratings.
