In a working group meeting chaired by commerce & industry minister Suresh Prabhu, on making India a USD 5 trillion economy in 7 years, top industry representatives emphasised on recognising the importance of small and medium enterprises sector.

The meeting was attended by heads of CII, FICCI, IFC, NASSCOM, Niti Aayog and senior officials from the Departments of Commerce and DIPP.

The participants underlined the need to factor in technological disruptions, challenges due to climate change, positive use of India's demographic dividend, conscious effort to make India's manufacturing sector a part of global value chain and recognizing the importance of small and medium scale enterprises to fuel India's growth story.

Prabhu said that India's GDP could reach $5 trillion in 7 years if manufacturing, services and farm sectors show consistent growth.

He underlined key role of the private sector to create new business models and strategies and leverage new technologies in order to fuel growth in the Indian economy.

Government will act as the facilitator in this process, he said.

Government of India has focused on twelve Champion Sectors to push growth in manufacturing and generate job opportunities in India.

These sectors have potential to become global champions and drive double digit growth in manufacturing, it is expected.

Banks need to be more liberal for MSME
Bhagawath Prasad | Sat Mar 17 06:27:15 2018
Sir, i would like to express my sincere appreciation for the commerce and industry ministry for recognising Indian potential to be 5 trillion USD economy , I would also appreciate the fact of recognising MSME role in growth. One must agree that it;'s unthinkable to achieve growth without due attention given to MSME and it's current problems. Although certain policies and let-go attitude is helping MSME sector for certain extent , most of policies at implementation level are actually not helping MSME , The kind of eco-sytsem provided in China and Europe is missing in Indian small sector, Whenever there is any impact at at large scale sector , actual tremors are felt by supporting small sector, Ministry need to look at protecting the sector by providing enough cushion and support during it's turbulence. Look at recent banking sector problems , we don't know what's going at top level but MSME is getting victimized , all of a sudden bankers have become rule compliant hence the sector is facing new challenges , it is my sincere request to government to ease out cash crunch , provide subsidized loans , power , land and hand-holding policy during any disturbance due to unanticipated external factors. In general small units are honest , they would like to live and lead respectfully, I have full faith in government that they would be bit liberal with MSME until business picks up.
