The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) recently informed that the government has banned the export of items of gold purity of above 22 carat-level.

According to a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), issued on August 14, exporters have been allowed to ship-out gold jewellery and other articles containing gold up to a maximum limit of 22 carats.

The DGFT amended certain areas of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2015-20, to make the new changes.

As per the notification, exporters as well as EOUs, Electronic Hardware Technology Parks (EHTPs), Software Technology Parks (STPs) and Bio Technology Parks (BTPs) will now be able to export items containing gold of 8 carats and above up to a maximum limit of 22 carats.

"Effect of this notification... to allow export of gold jewellery (plain or studded) and articles containing gold of 8 carats and above up to a maximum limit of 22 carat only from domestic tariff area and EOU/EHTP/STP/BTP units," read the notification dated August 14.

Illegally mined gold from Peru.
Stephen Chenery | Tue Aug 22 18:47:19 2017
I'd be very interested to know if the Indian Government has any policy on the import into India and use of gold from Peru, much of which is illegally being mined in remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon. Such gold mining is devastating vast areas of the Amazon Rainforests and polluting rivers with mercury. The Amazon Rainforests are the planets lungs. It has been estimated that if the current rate of loss continues the Amazon Rainforests could be gone 40 years, leading to a complete breakdown of the global climatic system.
