The 29th edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela (fair) will be held from Feb 1-15 at Surajkund near Faridabad, a senior Haryana official said in Chandigarh on Thursday.

Known for showcasing the richness and diversity of handicrafts, handlooms and the cultural heritage of the country, this time the fair will have Lebanon as the partner country and Chhattisgarh as the theme state.

Haryana Tourism Corporation Managing Director Sumita Misra said the mela would provide a rare opportunity to Chhattisgarh to showcase its tribal heritage and culture, which is still well preserved in the forests of Bastar region.

Misra said Lebanon would be the partner nation and craftspersons, cultural troupes and master chefs from the Mediterranean nation would showcase their talent and skills to enthral visitors.

About 20 countries have already confirmed their participation in the mela, which is jointly hosted by Haryana Tourism Corporation and Surajkund Mela Authority in collaboration with the union tourism, textiles, culture and external affairs ministries.

The popular mela witnessed over a million footfalls, including thousands of foreigners, in the last two editions.

Surajkund derives its name from the ancient amphitheatre Sun Pool constructed here in the 10th century AD by Raja Suraj Pal, one of the Tomar chieftains. The place is located in the Aravalli mountain range.
