Anglo-Dutch oil major Shell's Indian arm on Sunday announced the launching of fourth generation ‘flat-pack all-terrain truck ‘The Ox for carrying goods, especially for people in remote areas.

The vehicle, unveiled at Shell Eco-marathon in Chennai on Saturday, is an energy-efficient affordable solution for last-mile connectivity in India, a company statement said.

The Ox truck, which can be assembled in less than 12 hours, is the result of a global partnership between Shell, Gordon Murray Design and the Global Vehicle Trust, it said.

The Ox truck "can carry a payload of 1,900 kg including everyday necessities, medical supplies, building and agriculture materials", it said.

"Powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine, the construction of the body is lightweight and an equal weight distribution which gives it credentials to tackle rough surface despite it having a front wheel drive configuration," the statement added.

Commenting on the development, Shell India Chairman Nitin Prasad said in a statement: "Limited mobility restricts access to basic amenities in remote areas. Shell is eager to contribute to developing and promoting effective mobility solutions thereby improving the quality of life of people in these areas."
