The Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Statistics & Programme Implementation, Srikant Kumar Jena Tuesday said that the value additions in the petrochemicals chain offer immense possibilities and cater to the need of textiles and clothing, agriculture, packaging, infrastructure, healthcare, furniture, automobiles, information technology, power, electronics and telecommunications, irrigation, drinking water, infrastructure, construction and a host of other articles of daily and specialized usage amidst other emerging areas.

"Plastics have inspired and continue to drive innovations that help to solve society’s greatest challenges – from lifesaving technologies to more sustainable living," Jena said while giving away the 3rd National Awards for Technology Innovation in Petrochemical and Downstream, Plastic Processing Industry in New Delhi.  

Expressing the confidence, Jena said that the recognition of innovations in niche areas of petrochemicals and plastics processing will continue to encourage the Indian Plastics Industries to focus more and more on evolving cost effective systems & solutions and to develop environment friendly new generation polymers, process technologies, which will ensure sustained growth with competitive edge in the Petrochemicals & plastics Processing Downstream Industry in the years to come.

He presented the awards to the winners for their outstanding contribution in the fields of Polymeric Material, Polymeric Products, Polymer Processing Machinery & Equipment, Polymer Waste Management & Recycling Technology, Polymeric Materials & Products, Polymers in Agriculture and Water Conservation, Green Polymers in Public Health care and Research in the field of Polymer Science & Technology.

The award consists of a Shield, a Citation and a cash prize of Rs. 2.00 lakhs for the Winners. The award for the Runners up consists of a Shield and a Citation.

On the occasion Jena said, "The downstream petrochemical products permeate our daily lives in almost every aspect."

The Secretary, department of chemicals and petrochemicals Indrajit Pal, senior officials of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, representatives of industry, academia and R&D institutions, apart from the awardees, were also present on the occasion.
