State miner Coal India (CIL) produced 46.42 million tonnes of coal in January 2013, a growth of 4 percent over the same month last year, the government said Monday.

CIL had produced 44.6 million tonnes in January 2012, the coal ministry said here in a statement.

Declaring a much improved coal production in the first ten months of the current fiscal, CIL said it was a result of the measures taken by the government to boost production and supply.

During these 10 months, CIL registered a growth of eight percent in supply and 5.8 percent in coal production over the corresponding period of the previous year.

CIL's production during the period increased to 355.31 million tonnes from 335.89 million tonnes of the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

While CIL despatch to the power sector during this period grew 10.83 percent, coal supplies to state-run power generator NTPC was 107.5 million tonnes against a target of 102.5 million tonnes -- a growth of 16.4 percent over the same period last year, the ministry said.

State-run Singareni Collieries Company Ltd produced 42.64 million tonnes of coal during the ten months in question registering a growth of 3.9 percent over last year.
