Mauritius has targeted India as one of the major growth markets in tourism and is keen to work closely with India, its high commissioner to India Arye Juggessuer said in Shimla on Saturday.

"The government of Mauritius has targeted India as one of the major growth markets for the coming years and is dedicating a significant budget for tourism promotion," Juggessuer said.

He said tourism has emerged as the largest service industry in India and "our country is embarking upon to enhance collaboration with India in the field of tourism".

Tourism accounts for 8.4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the island nation.

Speaking at the all India conference of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), the high commissioner said the media was taking the tourism industry seriously, recognising the fact that travel and tourism had a powerful impact on local and national economies.

He said Mauritius is an international recognised tourism destination, attracting high-end tourists.

Political stability, safe and secure environment, strong social fabric with a warm hospitable people have enabled sustainable growth of tourism sector in Mauritius, Juggessuer added.

The three-day PRSI conference began here with sessions on communication and tourism.
