The seven mega-clusters for leather products, which has been proposed during the Budget allocation of 2011-12, is likely to be set up soon, said Commerce Secretary, Rahul Khullar in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Speaking in the sidelines of a Leather Summit, he told SME Times, "The discussion is in process and this will be set up soon. It usually takes six months for the clearances."

The mega-clusters for the leather sector would be set up in various parts of the country, such as places like Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, which are expected to contribute to further growth of Indian leather sector.

"The setting up of 7 mega-clusters is in the process of clearances and over the next six months, we will obtain the clearances of expenditure and then we have to start setting up these mega clusters soon," he said.

These clusters would help to scale up the leather export growth in the country and also offer significant employment opportunities to the rural people, he added.

Khullar added that a fund of around Rs. 200 crores would be provided as financial assistance for the development of these mega-clusters.
