The total horticulture production in the country has seen a modest leap as the yields are estimated to be around 283 million tonnes during 2015-16 crop year, but potato production as fallen, an official said on Monday.

"As against previous year's horticulture production of 280 million tonnes, this year there has been enhanced production including in fruits, vegetables and spices," an agriculture ministry official said here.

The potato yield is estimated to be around 437 lakh tonnes.

"This will be about nine percent lower than the previous year's production," a source said.

The production of fruits as estimated by official agencies will be 91 million tonnes which is 2 percent higher than the previous year, the source said adding the production of vegetables is estimated to be around 167 million tonnes.

With regard production of spices, sources said it is estimated to be around six million tonnes, about four percent higher than the previous year.

Among other essential food items and ingredients, the production of onion is estimated to be around 210 lakh tonnes, which would be 11 percent higher than the previous year.

The production of tomato is estimated to be around 184 lakh tonnes which is about 12 percent higher than the previous year, the official source said.
