A benchmark index for the equities, the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange, closed 64.24 points or 0.23 percent down on Tuesday.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also closed 11.25 points or 0.14 percent down at 8,320.70 points.

The 30-scrip Sensex, which opened at 27,561.32 points, closed at 27,426.35 points (provisionally at 3.33 p.m.) -- down 64.24 points, or 0.23 percent, over the previous day's close at 27,490.59 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 27,603.71 points and a low of 27,338.23 points in the intra-day trade.
