Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has moved to ensure adequate fuel supplies to power plants for uninterrupted production of electricity to overcome a crippling power shortage.

Ashraf Saturday directed the petroleum ministry to ensure 28,000 tonnes of gas to power plants daily to add 1,200 MW of electricity to the national grid.

He was chairing a meeting at his official residence, Geo TV reported.

The meeting also decided to provide additional gas to the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation (KESC) to produce 300 MW more and reduce its dependance on the national grid.

The country's total installed power generating capacity is 16,000 MW and the shortfall is in the region of 6,000 MW.
