Up to 2,700 petrol stations across Britain remain short of fuel following several days of panic buying last week, The Telegraph reported Monday.
A study commissioned by the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) showed that Sunday between a third and a half of independent retailers had either no petrol or no diesel, or had run out of both.
Brian Madderson, chairman of the RMI, claimed the crisis had highlighted the extent to which Britain's "energy resilience" had been compromised.
He warned that the closure of some 6,000 independent petrol stations over the last decade due to fierce competition from supermarkets now meant motorists had fewer forecourts to fill up from.
Revealing the results of a poll of 5,500 independent retailers, he told the BBC's Today programme: "Thirty to 50 percent of all the sites polled had either one grade or both grades out of stock.
