India is still a young market and hence e-commerce is going to see greater heights in the future. This is not just due to the internet proliferation in the country but also due to continuous innovations in this sector. Some of the factors that are going to play an extremely important part for e-marketplaces in the future are mobile based shopping, which has already picked up a lot of pace, social media as a lead generation tool, further innovation in logistics, said Ms. Radhika Ghai Aggarwal, Co-Founder & CMO, ShopClues.com to SME Times in an exclusive interview.
She added that India has a favorable environment for fostering entrepreneurial talent of women. "I'm happy that more and more women are taking the plunge as well," she said.
Excerpts of the interview..
Please tell us something about your website ShopClues.com. Radhika Ghai: Founded in July 2011 in Silicon Valley, ShopClues.com is India's first and the largest managed marketplace that connects buyers and sellers online and offers a trusted and safe online shopping experience. With our customer centric approach we provide the best online shopping experience to our customers - starting from the great selection, low price, ease of use, fast delivery, and ending with the best customer service you have ever experienced. ShopClues ships in over 25k cities across India and has thousands of online stores.
How does it feel when you see yourself as a women entrepreneur? Do you think it is hard for women to survive in the industry? Radhika Ghai: Given the time and opportunity and my vast experience in retail, starting ShopClues was a logical step for all of us. I love my job and as an entrepreneur, I thrive, live, breathe ShopClues.
It is true that only a handful of ecommerce companies have women as co-founders or in key management positions. However as an industry, I feel there is a lot of scope for women and there are a lot of opportunities for women to succeed.
What is the procedure of merchant registration on ShopClues.com? And how cost effective is you registration fee structure in compare to others? Radhika Ghai: ShopClues has a very simple registration form for sellers which requires basic details about their business. Merchants can register for free on ShopClues.com â there is no charge for setting up your shop on or platform â we only charge a service fee when your online store makes a sale, and this varies from one product category to the other.
There are so many online shopping websites how do you find yours different from them? I mean what is the USP of ShopClues.com? Radhika Ghai: We at ShopClues, believe that we are the marketplace for the masses. While the battle for standard categories in E-commerce has become fierce and cut throat, the nonstandard categories are starting to look very attractive. This is what differentiates us from our competitors- we cater to the masses and capitalize on the non-standard categories.
There are 3.6 million registered Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in India. How you see the small manufacturing sector in India? Radhika Ghai: This sector is abundant in potential but needs fillip for competing with heavy-weight Indian and Global brands. Thatâs the opportunity that ecommerce offers to these SMEs â they can leverage our channel for reaching out to large customer pools anywhere in the country.
As an SME what sort of problems you are facing in your day today business? Radhika Ghai: Weâre part of a small but rapidly growing industry, and for a sector like ecommerce the problems are mostly linked to the regulatory environment, taxation policies, etc.
As a women entrepreneur do you get more support from the government of India? Radhika Ghai: India has a favorable environment for fostering entrepreneurial talent and Iâm happy that more and more women are taking the plunge as well.
In your views why online shopping is getting so much popular in our society and how do you see it? Radhika Ghai:The ecosystem is finally right for the E-commerce industry in India and the business is booming. Starting from a broom to an expensive gadget, ecommerce sites are literally a one stop shop for all of a personâs needs. The reason behind the adoption of this technique lies in the attractive catalogues, user friendly interface, easy payment methods and the obvious but very important factor of convenience.
How you see the future of e-marketplace in India? Radhika Ghai: India is still a young market and hence e-commerce is going to see greater heights in the future. This is not just due to the internet proliferation in the country but also due to continuous innovations in this sector. Some of the factors that are going to play an extremely important part for e-marketplaces in the future are mobile based shopping, which has already picked up a lot of pace, social media as a lead generation tool, further innovation in logistics.
What are your future plans? Radhika Ghai: We witnessed 600% year-on-year growth in FY2013-14, and expect to cross Rs.700 crores in GMV this year. We also plan to go public in the year 2016. This year, our focus is on business growth and technology upgrade, and most of our capacity building will be around resource planning. As an e-commerce platform on the cloud, technology is extremely crucial to us and we will continue to aggressively add to our workforce in this field. At ShopClues.com, we have a very capital efficient business model with the industryâs highest GMV for the number of employees.
