Do you find yourself in a dilemma about attending a conference! A small business owner often does. There are always a lot of chores to do at office, and the idea of giving one's valuable time to a conference doesn't usually seem worthwhile to many. Recently, I found myself thinking exactly that when I was invited to attend a two-day conference abroad on B2B trade. Although I'm not a kind of guy to shy away from such events, this time I really found it difficult to keep myself away from my office, with lots of work pending on my desk.

But I left for the event, and I would have repented if I hadn't. The conference was directly related to the nature of my business I have been for the last two decades; I met there a number of entrepreneurs from my field and acquired some invaluable insights from them on what is going on in B2B trade across the world; I shared information, asked questions and learned about my peers and competitors; and most notably I have made many new connections. For me, all these sum up into a brilliant experience.

I think conferences can open an entrepreneur's world to new ideas and possibilities. When you attend an industry conference, you can meet with like-minded people at a single place and in a concentrated time period, listen to some brilliant speakers, and share views with fellow entrepreneurs willing to share their knowledge, and this, in turn, helps in broadening your prospective. And especially when you take part in a conference at international level, you get out of your country and your culture and see what entrepreneurs are up to on a global stage.

Besides for learning, you should attend conferences also for potential connections.  In a conference environment, you get the opportunity to meet a lot of new people who are already in a learning and networking mode, and only by sitting next to the right person, you might gain a lot. However, don't leave everything to chance: go on your own, talk to people you know and don't know, ask questions about their work, pass on your contact details, and last but not the least: enjoy yourself and be in the moment.

A little bit of preparedness goes a long way. First of all, be careful about choosing a conference to attend. Although it is difficult to quantify the benefits from conference attendance, try to think about what opportunities it will present. Look at the list of attendees or speakers beforehand. Give some thought on what benefits can be derived. Secondly, as I have already mentioned, play an active role in the session. Be attentive, ask questions, avoid being negative and identify people who you want to speak to later. And finally, if you meet interesting people, never forget to follow-up.

I look forward to reading your comments.

Mehul Patel | Wed Dec 5 06:16:21 2012
It's a great learning experience, we attended a Tube India International conference even before starting our business of manufacturing SS seamless tubes. Now we have a fair bit of knowledge of the competition and the challenges; and we made new contacts there. Most importantly, it's encouragement that we had from the national & international dignitaries present there.

Attending conferences makes sense
Shrinivas Moghe | Sun Dec 2 09:03:10 2012
I agree with you Sir. Very convincingly the topic is discussed. Thanks! We (SSI sector) surely need to change our thinking in this matter. But to follow up this advice, calls for certain basic requirements, as under: 01.our business has to be above the state of survival struggle, 02.It must be fairly organised business, 03.Budget allocation for attending any rightly chosen seminar or trade fair, during a financial year, will make it easy to follow up this good suggestion. AND 04.Never hesitate to ask questions and mingle with the visitors. Unfortunately, for many obvious reasons; this is a rare quality seen in an entrepreneur. But nonetheless, its a good article.

Yes, followup is essential.

Attend the conference of your chosen area, meet and discuss with right person and last but not the least do follow-up and interact over a period of time and stay in touch with ground reality always. This makes a sense I think.

attending conferences makes sense for SMEs

Yes. U are true in many sense. Even though we have lot of work pending in office. But when we leave for such kind of conferences or exhibition, we learned a lot. We acquire valuable knowledge from the people. Its true saying that field work and field experience are far more helpful than sitting in office and preparing & just planning for business growth. Here we get insights how others peoples are growing, what changes they have made to achieve success. So all in all conference does helps us a lot to grab more innovative ideas. I love to read your every mail from CEO's letter. The insights u put up are really practical and much more helpful. Thanks for mailing your views and perspective.

Its a well made piece. Carries good message. Important is to be quite selective about which one to join & in which capacity and to be active. Lot can happen in Meetings like Seminars, Conference, Symposia etc.

I agreed with you totally as if I thought at one stage it is me who have written this note. However I would like to add one more thing that entrepreneur should be clear in his mind about that day's priorities then it will be easy for him to decide on attaining such conferences.

Benefits derived from conference attendance
TS Saibaba | Sat Dec 1 05:39:42 2012
I agree with the editors view. It's a fact.It also happened with me. I participated in training programme conducted by CIMAP Hyderabad and befriend with a grower and through him another grower and with these two friends we learnt many things and shared many things on mutual products and it virtually helped each other in business perspective.

Attending conferences is like an Important, but not urgent activity. The results may not be immediate but will help one obtain the right information, at the right time. The benefits may not be visible in the short-term but will show-up in long term results.
