Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are faced with many challenges. First and foremost amongst them is stocking products for which one needs to rent a store or warehouse space. Secondly, the reluctance of a buyer to deal with a small business entity is always there. Thirdly, the financial aspect. With SME financing a distant dream and many manufacturers and distributors having a minimum order, sometimes SMEs are at wits end on how to expand or even to start a business.
I think, for SMEs who face such challenges, drop shipping can be a boon, whereby these problems can be reduced or eliminated. With drop shipping, selling by Internet, mail order, or export, and without much storage space for inventory at home, can be an easier and most profitable option.
Drop shipping is shipping of merchandise from a supplier directly to the buyer and can thus minimize a SME's inventory and administrative costs. So if you are a SME with a minimum budget, or you are looking to start a new retail business, drop shipping can be the best option. Drop shipping can not only save time and money in your existing business, but can also help SMEs to manage their own supply chain with less effort and with more effectiveness. And what's more! Even if the SME is a manufacturer, it can use this supply chain management technique. But in this case, it will need an agent to act as the middlemen between the SME manufacturer and its customers.
However as a drop shipping retailer, one may have to keep samples or images in the store or website for customers to inspect before purchasing the product. I have seen that most drop shippers have found that the effective way to showcase the products online is on a B2B portal.
The foremost advantage I see for a drop shipper is that there is no need to keep an inventory. When one sells a product, one's customer finances the shipping, while the distributor deals with the stock. Moreover, drop shipping also saves some extra cost required for shipping insurance, warehousing, etc.
However assessing one's drop shipper can be a challenging task for SMEs. Having said that, with a little bit of research one can turn these challenges into stepping stones to success.

Hello this is very interesting. I have been researching dropshipping companies and website turnkey offerings here in the USA for 3 years. Unfortunately dropship companies here DOBA, DROPSHIP DESIGN, CLICK BANK, have limited products and everyone else is selling the same stuff on EBAY from these companies. There is a very good opportunity for someone to start a company like this that has much more offerings. Drop shipping concept has gained a lot of ground now, given the expanse that internet (B2B,B2C) has given to business,the world over.
SMEs must try it. They too must own a website or use professional ecommerce sites for the purpose. To advertise their products and such services as Drop Shipping SMEs should also use others' sites too.

Here in my country the best solution to the problem of stocks and sales management for SMEs has been addressed by the province of Cordoba.
Under a standard rule-building complex have been built so-called "business incubator. " These buildings, very cheap but very sober and intelligently designed, are home for ten SMEs. Like some of the comments below, this system would and can work if there is possibility of returning the goods if they are not as described or have deafects. Unless this matter can be addressed, most people would not buy from SMEs rather buy directly from the manufacturers or know branded big firms to ensure genuine goods and after sale service in case of any trouble.

I believe there are a good number of retailers or eCommerce website operators are interested in utilizing the services of drop-shippers (those who are either manufacturers or hold inventories of items) but I could not find any drop-shippers who can ship to customers in India. Another aspect I want to add is the payment gateways may not like the retailers to sell their products on Credit Card payments if they are drop shipped. One of the leading payment processing gateways in India had a condition in their agreement that the items sold are NOT drop shipped. Probably there is a higher risk of getting charge backs from drop-shipping type of orders.

Proposal is nice if it can be implemented. I have seen that after the initial deals, supplier directly likes to deal with the enduser.Agents are bypassed.So it nice to save on inventory but there is a risk of losing business.It would be better if storage facilities like CWC ( central warehousing corporation) were working where goods without payment of duty were kept. Same way developing storage facilities for ready to ship goods should be looked into where by Agent gets 80% gets funds for working capital till final shipment formalities are completed.

Exporters who are only traders and not mfrs can get benefitted between the mfrs and buyers - this mode of operation should be helpful. However, for the exporters who would like to establish with full force, can you please advise. I am an exporter who has started with a vision of exports, last year and still working on first consignment. this article is bit scary for exporters. obviously understandable for riskwise. but still..
